Mullite brick is a kind of high alumina refractory whose main crystal phase is mullite (3Al2O3·2SiO2). Mullite brick is mainly used in the top of stoves, the body and bottom of blast furnaces, the regenerators of glass melting furnaces and ceramic furnace.
Features and Applications of the Mullite Brick

There are two kinds of mullite bricks: sintered mullite brick and fused mullite brick. Sintered mullite brick is made by molding and sintering high bauxite with addition of clay or raw alumina as binder. Fused mullite brick is made of high bauxite, alumina and clay in a electric arc furnace by the reducing fusion method. The fused mullite brick has larger crystal grains and better thermal shock than the sintered mullite brick.

Mullite brick is usually composed of 60-75% Al2O3 and 25-35% ZrO2. In addition to mullite, mullite brick with a lower content of Al2O3 also contains glass phase and cristobalite, and mullite brick with a higher content of Al2O3 also contains corundum.

The refractoriness of the mullite brick is up to 1790℃. Its melting temperature under load is about 1600～1700℃. Its cold Crushing Strength is 70 ～260MPa. It has good thermal shock resistance. It is characterized by good high temperature resistance, high melting point, good creep resistance, low thermal expansion and good corrosion resistance.

The factors that affect the performance of mullite bricks include:

1）The content of alumina and mullite crystal phase.

2）Whether the physical and chemical properties of mullite brick meet the requirement.

3）The refractoriness and melting temperature under load.

4）Whether the fused method and sintering method strictly comply to the producing standard of mullite brick.

5）Whether the radio of mullite and other raw materials meets the requirement.

6）The bulk density.
