Application Of Fire Clay Brick In The Coke Oven

Fire clay brick is a type of acid refractory contains 30-40% Al2O3. It is one of refractory bricks widely used in the coke oven.

Fire clay brick is made of calcined clay (clinker) and some soft clay. After grinding, mixing, forming and drying, it is fired at 1300~1400℃. The main mineral component of fire clay brick is kaolinite (Al2O3·2SiO2·2H2O).

Fire clay bricks used in coke ovens have the following characteristics:

1)The refractoriness of fire clay brick is low, about 1580-1750℃, and increases with the increase of Al2O3.

2)Its softening temperature under load is lower than 1300℃ because it contains a lot of amorphous glass phase with a low melting point.

3)Fire clay brick has good thermal stability and has small volume expansion and uniform change when heated to 1100℃. It has great resistance to sudden temperature changes. The water cooling frequency of common clinker fire clay brick is10-20 times, multi-clinker fire clay brick above 50 times and some even as high as 100 times.

4)The main composition of fire clay brick is Al2O3 and SiO2. Since the content of SiO2 is higher than that of the Al2O3, it is weakly acidic and has better resistance to acid slags than to alkali slags.

5)Fire clay brick is manufactured with soft clay as binding agents. As the mineralization of binders and clinker is not complete in the firing process, it will have irreversible volume shrinkage or expansion during long-term use at high temperature. This phenomenon is called reheating linear change. The residual shrinkage rate of fire clay brick should be not more than 1%.

Due to the properties mentioned above, fire clay brick is mainly used in the low-temperature parts with big temperature fluctuation and not suitable to the high temperature parts in modern large coke ovens. Due to its low cost, it is used to build small coke ovens.
