Properties and Applications of Fused Cast Beta Alumina Block for Glass Furnaces
Fused cast beta alumina block comprises of a majority of beta alumina crystals and a slight portion of alpha alumina crystals in compact structure. It is the best refractory material for the top of the structure, molter crown, port crown, feeder channel, ect.
Beta
Fused cast alumina block is produced by melting and casting high purity alumina in electric furnace at 2000℃。Fused cast Beta alumina block is essentially made of high purity aluminum oxide and soda, up to a final chemistry of about 93% Al2O3(99% beta alumina), and around 6.5% Na2O. After adequate fusing and annealing, a crystallographic composition of almost 100% beta-alumina is formed.
Fused cast beta alumina block is not suitable for glass contact applications, since its resistance to corrosion against silicatic melts is not good enough. However, due to its property of base saturation, it exhibits an outstanding resistance to alkali vapors attack, that is the typical condition in the superstructure of a glass furnace.
The virtual absence of liquid boundary phases makes this alumina extremely inert in glass furnaces superstructure applications. Moreover, the intersected texture of large beta alumina ensures great dimensional stability, excellent thermal shock resistance and great resistance against spalling. It does not contain impurities that may contaminate melting glass and does not form molten droplets.
A weakness of fused cast beta alumina blocks is the attack from silica when applied in superstructure. Since silica is not among vapor-born species, silicatic attack is only possible when, due to turbulence, dry batch and proximity to the doghouse area of the furnace. Silica dust is mechanically impacting the beta alumina superstructure surface, causing a nephelitic corrosion and spalling. That is why in float furnaces, very often the first and second ports are lined with fused cast AZS blocks, while the successive are made of beta alumina fused cast.
Due to the beta crystal size distribution and characteristics, fused cast beta alumina blocks exhibit a distinctly worse mechanical cold resistance compared to fused cast alpha-beta blocks and therefore must be handled with care to prevent corner and edge spalling, cracks.
Sunrise refractory offers high quality fused cast beta alumina blocks at a competitive price for glass furnaces.
