The Crystal Structure Of Alpha-Beta Fused Cast Alumina Block
Fused cast Alumina Block is perfect complements to the fused cast AZS block for sensitive demanding applications. Among the fused cast alumina blocks, alpha-beta block is the typical glass contact materials for glass furnaces.
Alpha-beta fused cast Alumina Block is made from high pure alumina powder in a three phase electric arc furnace at 2000℃. It comprises of about 94 Al2O3, around 4% Na2O, 1% SiO2 and 1% other oxides.
It has great performance against contamination to molten glass. When in contact with molten glass, it barely produces any blistering or stones. It contains almost no impurities such as Fe2O3 and TiO2. It contains just a small amount of matrix glass phase
Alpha-beta fused cast Alumina Block has a crystallographic composition of α-Al2O3 crystals (Al2O3, corundum) and β-Al2O3 crystals (NaAl11O17) with a small amount of matrix glass phase. It has a compact structure of α-Al2O3 crystals and β-Al2O3 crystals in a most ideal proportion which is approximately 50% and 50% respectively with the matrix glass phase filling gaps between the crystals. The intertwined crystals of the materials result in a very dense structure.
α-Al2O3 crystal has good corrosion to molten glass, though not as good as that of Baddeleyite. Most importantly, it does not develop a passivation layer like fused cast AZS block, so it does not cause defects such as knots, cords and cat-scratches, which are always caused by fused cast AZS. α-Al2O3 crystal in use will be corroded by dissolving slowly in the glass through a concentration gradient at the contact surface. Temperature and glass velocity tangential to the surface determine the corrosion speed. Beta alumina, essentially sodium aluminate, is less resistant to a glass liquid than α-Al2O3 crystal.
Under 1350 ℃, it has as excellent corrosion resistance against molten glass as fused cast AZS block. However, when temperature rises over 1350℃, corrosion speed increases rapidly compared to fused cast AZS block.
Alpha-beta fused cast Alumina Block is widely used in working tank, feeder channels, paving blocks and fore-hearth channel block, superstructures and lipstone, etc.
