Superstructure Corrosion And Fused Cast Alumina Block

More and more glass furnaces are converted to oxy-fuel firing for environmental or economical reasons. One of the drawbacks of oxy-fuel furnaces is the severer superstructure corrosion. Fused cast alumina block has been used in the superstructure of oxy-fuel glass furnaces as an alternative to the traditional silica crown.
Superstructure Corrosion And Fused Cast Alumina Block
The superstructure is exposed to several corrosive factors during the application: batch carryover, evaporation of alkali, flame, high temperature, temperature variations and high stressed situation like oxy fuel firing. Those corrosive factors cause the corrosion of the superstructure refractories. Superstructure refractory corrosion is one of the potent and long-term sources of glass defects. It can continue through the entire campaign duration.

The superstructure and crown of glass furnaces are typically made of silica bricks. However, silica bricks, when applied to oxy-fuel furnaces, experience accelerated corrosion, varying greatly with system design and the operating conditions of the furnace. Fused cast AZS block is also used in the crown as an alternative to silica bricks. Though it has high corrosion resistance, it shows exudation phenomena leading to glass defects.

Alpha-beta block superstructure corrosion in air-fuel and oxy-fuel furnaces is less severe than other refractories. Over the last 10 years, alpha-beta alumina block have been successfully used in the crown and superstructure of oxy-fuel glass melting furnaces, showing excellent physical and chemical stability over multiple campaigns.

Alpha-beta Block is formed by the compact structure of alpha alumina and beta alumina crystals in a most ideal proportion which is approximately 50% and 50% respectively, where intertwined crystals of both materials result in a very dense structure. It has less glassy phase and below 1350 ℃ has excellent corrosion resistance.

Alpha-beta  block is currently considered the optimum superstructure refractory for most glass melting applications where fused cast is considered. This material has therefore been widely and successfully applied in crown and superstructure construction for oxy-fuel glass furnaces including soda-lime, TV panel, TV funnel and borosilicate.

Sunrise offers silica brick, fused cast AZS block and fused cast alumina block at reasonable prices. They can be widely used in different kinds of glass furnaces and effectively improve the service life of glass furnaces.
