Selection of Refractory for the Blast Furnace Bosh
The bosh connects the shaft and the belly of the blast furnace. Due to high temperature, big thermal load, big temperature fluctuation, high thermal shock, and severe alkali corrosion, slag corrosion and batch erosion, the bosh has always been the key to the service life of the blast furnaces.
The bosh has a big head and a small underpart, which meets the need of the increasing of volume of gases and the reducing of volume of charges into iron slags. The inclination of the bosh should be suitable too. In order to improve the permeability of charges, the bosh angle has a trend of expanding. For medium-sized blast furnaces, the bosh angle is between 80-82︒.
The temperature in this part is high and the charges is 1600-1650℃ in the lower part. The humidity of air flow is high too and a large amount of slags are formed and drop. Therefore, the thermal radiation and the slag erosion are severe here. Besides, the invasion of alkali metals, the deposition of carbon and the erosion of top-down melt and bottom-up hot air flow are severe. Therefore, this part is one of the weakest points of the blast furnaces.
Therefore, refractory materials used in this part should have good corrosion resistance and erosion resistance as well as good thermal shock resistance.
In the past, high alumina brick and corundum brick are used mostly, while now SiC brick are always used. In japan, advanced refractory materials with high purity, good thermal conductivity and good corrosion resistance, such as fused alumina brick, synthetic mullite brick and corundum brick, are used in the bosh and outlet and achieve good results. In Germany, various types of refractory bricks, such as semi-graphite bricks, fused alumina bricks,
mullite brick and directly bonded silicon nitride brick, are tested in the bosh.
Calcined alumina carbon brick and calcined mirco-pore aluminum carbon brick also have good compressive strength, good resistance to bending, thermal shock, corrosion and erosion, high thermal conductivity and low price. They are widely used in the medium-sized and small-sized blast furnaces.
