Application Of High Alumina Brick In The Coke Oven
High alumina brick belongs to SiO2-Al2O3 refractories, with Al2O3 content of more than 48%. Due to its good resistance to slags, it is mainly used in the furnace end of the coke oven.
According to the mineral composition, high alumina brick can be divided into mullite-corundum brick, corundum-mullite brick, mullite brick and corundum brick. According to the content of Al2O3, it can be classified into 3 grades: Grade I(Al2O3>65%), Grade II(Al2O3 55%~65%) and Grade III(Al2O3 48%~55%).
It is mainly composed of bauxite. Its firing temperature is about 1500℃. It has dense structure and good resistance to slags. As it has a high content of Al2O3 which is neutral, it has good resistance to both acid and alkali slags.
It has a high refractoriness among the SiO2-Al2O3 refractories. Its refractoriness and softening temperature under load are higher than those of fire clay brick. With the increase of Al2O3, its refractoriness increases, generally no more than 1750-1790℃. The refractoriness of corundum brick with more than 95% Al2O3 can be as high as 1900-2000℃. With the increase of SiO2 and metal oxides, its softening temperature under load decreases. The softening temperature under load of common high alumina brick is 1420-1530℃, while that of corundum brick with more than 95% Al2O3 is above 1600℃.
Since corundum and mullite crystals coexist in the high alumina brick and the linear expansion coefficient of corundum is bigger than that of mullite, when the temperature changes, the difference in expansion causes stress in the brick, so it has bad thermal shock resistance
Its linear change on reheating depends on the degree of firing. If the firing temperature is high enough and the firing time is sufficient, it will have stable volume and small linear change on reheating. One the contrary, recrystallization will occur in it and result in residual shrinkage.
Due to the above features, high alumina brick is mainly used in the furnace end in the combustion chamber burners and carbonization chamber of coke ovens. But it is not suitable to the wall of the carbonization chamber, since it may have crimping and uplifting angles at high temperature.
